Faffing about on bmw forums and the hate for the compact is amazing. “Shouldve saved up and bought a proper BMW” “You just got it for the badge etc.” Yet if you own an ae86 youre a JDM yo driving god (not hating on the 86 by the way I love those things.) Guess the interwebs dont understand the appeal of an attainable RWD little hatchback. Yeah its not the fastest thing in the world but the handling is great and I like the quirky, odd looks.

Yeah, that’s why oppo is great indeed, we try not to judge.

Though I really think you’re going too far with the E36 posts...

Just kidding, haha

I love these. Small, lightweight. Very tossable, rwd and generally built as manuals. Plus, I like the looks.

Well you should have saved up and bought a proper BMW. There I said it. I’m just kidding, not everyone has a lot of disposable income and as an enthusiast, you shouldn’t hate one someone if they got the car cause they like driving it. Nothing wrong with a cheap RWD hatch in my opinion.

Yea I have visited the forums a few times since I found Oppo...they’re the worst. Unfortunately they are one of the better sources for model specific information, also one of the better sources for misinformation. I sift from a distance on forums, I come to oppo for the camaraderie.

How Is It Not A “Proper BMW”?

Trunk impaired is the affectionate term to e36 hatches. Yeah the forums are shitty especially if you drive “the unloved models”.

Everyone has their own reasons for buying what they buy. There are plenty of cars i dont like personally but im not guna hate on anyone for buying them.

Yeah same here. Ive lurked on a few forums for info over the years but i can never hold a decent conversation on them.

Exactly, the whole car world is so big and varied, you shouldn’t hate on someone who has different tastes then you. It’s still fun to rip on friends and tell them they got the wrong car, but you know that’s all in good fun and never serious.

Oh of course theres a lot of friendly mocking between my friends. The bmw has already been named “the ultimate tailgating machine.”

Something tells me that the “you just bought it for the badge” guy doesn’t see the irony of giving someone crap for not owning “the right BMW.”

Yeah it seems that way, most say its a shopping cart for women (which is offensive to a whole lot of people). Plus someone who buys cars for the badge probably wouldnt own a renault as their DD...

The only thing I got against the Ti is the fact it never came with an inline-six (and that it has older, E30 rear suspension, but hey, it if works...).

Then again, I drive a 318i, and can attest this engine is more than enough to have fun.

Kinja'd!!! E90M3 > Twingo Tamer - About to descend into project car hell.
05/31/2016 at 16:36

Kinja'd!!!0

Ironically, like the 316ti was one of the cheapest BMWs you could buy (it’d be the 318ti version here in the states), I have the cheapest BMW money could buy in the states in 2012, a 128i. It was still a whopping $38k new, so by not mean cheap, but it doesn’t get hated on for being that.

Yeah...

On the plus side, imagine how self-conscious they must feel every time they see a really expensive marque like a Ferrari.

Even if it did come with a straight six i could afford to run one unfortunately. It would be a riot with more power though. Its still great fun with its 100 and something hp though.

A friend of mine has got similar hate for his diesel 1 series (same old only bought for the badge stuff). He also just bought that because he liked it and wanted rwd.

You could have that in Europe I think... The only one in North America was the 318.

Didn’t realize we were talking about europe here, my bad.

They did came with a straight six too. The 323ti has one. They are a bit rare but I have seen some. I was considering to find one of these in the last winter but I went for a E34 instead.

My friend has a E46 316ti and he likes it a lot. It’s not terribly fast but it is very nimble.

That’s BMW forums for you.

What you’ve actually got is a cut-price E30 316i with a little bit of added weight.

Strip out a bit of that weight (ok, quite a bit) and you’ve got a cut-price E30!

Kinja'd!!! Twism > kanadanmajava1

Yeah six-cylinder were Euro-only. North America only got the 318ti.

You guys got way more interesting variations than we did.

05/31/2016 at 17:45

Kinja'd!!!1

No problem, wasn’t aware that it was Euro-only either. It’s probably one of the few cases where you guys didn’t/don’t get the most powerful engine.

Well, screw ‘em.

There are a bunch of ways to think about this, one of which is how much fun you can have with a car you enjoy without spending a fortune on it.

Some of the cheapest cars I’ve owned were some of the most satisfying, probably because it was so easy for them to exceed my expectations.

But, back to my original point: screw ‘em. If you are enjoying it, you don’t need to justify it to anyone. Have fun with your car and let them enjoy their lease payments. ;-)

I think that the only special BMW that Europe didn’t get but US did is the E60 M5 with a manual. That’s probably the only modern BMW that I would like to have one day...

Meh, just forget ‘em dude. I’ve dipped my toe into the car forum world with mixed results; they’re helpful, and there’s great people on there, but they’re mixed in with assholes who think their opinion is the only one which matters.

Personally, I love the compact. An e36 with a set of m parallels is on my ‘cars I’d like to own list’

Yeah it’s very hit and miss but unfortunately the dickheads are usually the most vocal. Damn it looks nice in that colour with those wheels.
